qod: sticks and stones

"People say sticks and stones may break your bones but names can never hurt you.

But that's not true.

Words can hurt.

They hurt me.

Things were said to me that I still haven't forgotten."

- Demi Lovato

I love this. It is so true. Your words will impact people, so be careful how you use them. Someone may seem unphased and brush things off, but you never really know what they are feeling.

Remember: it is amazing what someone can hide by putting on a smile.

Just be careful, because sometimes we joke around - and things seem like they are funny.. But you never know, the jokes you are saying are probably at someone's expense, and that person might get really hurt by them. Even if they are acting like its funny and you are doing it in a completely friendly way.

And if you ARE the butt of a joke, and it is hurting you - say something. Because if you don't it will keep happening, and over time you may begin to resent those people saying those jokes. And those people probably don't mean any real harm. They probably think it is good hearted and funny. But if it hurts, it hurts. Simple as that. So just, say something. You can't expect people to know what you are feeling if you don't show them... right?

Sticks and stones may break your bones.. But words can break your heart.

Stand By Me

If the sky that we look upon should tumble and fall.
And the mountains should crumble to the sea.
I won't cry, I won't cry, no I won't shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me.

Oh Frankie, Frankie, stand by me.

I seriously can't imagine my life without this little guy.

I just hope he knows how much I love him.

We have all heard that there is subliminal messaging in disney movies (i.e. "sex" in the stars in lion king or the penis on the cover of little mermaid).. but I had NO idea about this:

In a bunch of Disney movies, they throw in snippets or characters from other disney movies, just really briefly.. How cool is that though? I had NO IDEA. I love it because it is so harmless, unless the other stuff, and just really fun. My day is made.

The only one I can remember noticing as odd was the Tarzan one with the tea set that looked like beauty and the beast, but every other example went completely unnoticed by me. I just watched Lilo and Stich and the Mulan poster didn't even phase me or stick out one bit.

My mind is blown. Is yours?

taking those steps

It's funny.. We always seem to think we are so brave in life. But you know what? We might not be as brave as we think we are. Smart? Yes. Brave? Maybe not.

There are things in life that are scary to approach, and so, most of the time - we don't approach them. We avoid. We avoid real good. But because we are so smart, we manage to tell ourselves that we aren't missing anything. That we would never have taken those steps any way. That what we are doing is normal and there is no need to take those steps. We convince ourselves that we are perfectly brave and that is that. We are making the right choice, and there really wasn't any other choice... right?

Sometimes, we want to avoid so much, and we manage to avoid so well, and because we convince ourselves that what we are doing is the right thing - we stop realizing that we start to miss things.

Big things. Small things. Silly things. Regular things. Just, things. Like going to the gym. Or going to your regular bus stop. Or taking a short cut where you know you might run into someone. We just, we don't realize ..

That is, until we have to take them.

And that is when we realize how totally NOT brave we are. A normal thing, like going to the gym, becomes this thing that makes you panic. Shake. Doubt everything you know about yourself. And then your smart little protective part of your brain tries to tell you that you don't need to take these steps, that avoiding is brave... and those are the kind of thoughts that stop us from these things. Whatever kind of things they are... we are halted. We are scared, and we are halted.

However, there will be a part of us telling us that if you don't take these steps that you are being a big ol coward, and you are missing out on life.

So we take those steps. No matter how terrified we are to take them. Because.. well, there is an even smarter part of our brain that tells us that taking these steps is so worth it in the scheme of things, because if we never take them, we can never know what we are missing.

And our lives will become a big "what if?"

And well, that part of our brain isn't always there for us. And sometimes it never shows up, and we never ever will know what we are missing because we never ever take those steps. Its scary. And it is normal to not want to take those steps. But it is also scary to NOT take the steps. Its just a crazy thing in life that we all go through.

But when we do take them. Its usually so worth it. Because we find out one of two things:

1. Fearing taking those steps was totally warranted, because things are worse. Nothing has been missed by me not taking those steps. And after that realization, you know that you won't take those steps again. And you know that you are not missing anything. You can move on.

2. Fearing taking those steps was totally stupid, because nothing bad happened! All this time was wasted fearing taking those small steps, and all those moments were missed, and for what? Nothing. And after that? You can move on.

Hmm... So maybe number 1 sucks. Maybe number one hurts... but regardless - if you take that step, that scary scary leap that might seem so impossible, the results that come from that step will be the ability to move on.

Hiding from your problems and from your life will not allow you to move forward. It will leave you with so many what ifs. And what kind of life is that? Taking one step might seem like the scariest thing in the world... but regardless what comes from that step, good or bad, you will know the exact answer to those "what ifs" and you will stop asking yourself.

You will move on. In whatever direction that is.. You move on..

And I think that is SO worth the fear.

Kelsey Edwards: Dumb Blonde/Vegetarian

So. I know you all know that I have my moments... my blonde moments... and well...

You know when there is a moment so bad that you just KNOW you will be mocked about it for the rest of your life? Well... something happened the other day, something that I did, and I just know - my family members will NEVER let it go. And really, I don't blame them - it is OUTRAGEOUS.

For those of you who don't know - I am a recent vegetarian (3 weeks strong), and I really am more of a vegetarian than I ever thought. I am now grossed out when meat is in the same vicinity as my food and can't eat things that have been touched by meat.. My sister is no longer a vegetarian but I am, and I can't see myself NOT being a vegetarian.

That being said - I had a whoops.

So we went to a coney island joint for breakfast - and me and my non-vegetarian mother and sister all ordered omlettes. I looked at the menu pretty hard and was super impressed by all the vegetarian choices! So, I ended up going with the farmer's omlette.

The lady came out with our omlettes, gave Brooke her egg-white veggie omlette, my mom her tomato/onion/feta omelette, and gave me my omelette - complete with HAM. yes, HAM!

I was like uhhh this isn't what I ordered, and then looked at the menu.. at the farmer's omelette.. and yep, ham was like the 3rd ingredient. WHO DOES THAT? I was so embarrassed. seriously, who doesn't read carefully enough that they end up ordering MEAT when they dont EAT meat.

Luckily, my mom was willing to trade with me.. So I got to enjoy (well, minus the feta) her vegetarian omelette. She's the best. Deserves an award... for putting up with my dumb shiz all these years. I can't imagine it is easy.

And I just googled it.. and like.. hate to admit this (what the members of my family have all been telling me since it has happened): bacon or ham is ALWAYS included in a farmer's omelette...

oops... who knew? NOT ME.

Moral of the story:

You're welcome for the advice.

we push ourselves because we HAVE to...

They take pictures of the mountain climbers at the top of the mountain. They are smiling, ecstatic, triumphant. They don’t take pictures along the way cause who wants to remember the rest of it?

We push ourselves because we have to, not because we like it.

The relentless climb, the pain and anguish of taking it to the next level – nobody takes pictures of that, nobody wants to remember, we just want to remember the view from the top, the breathtaking moment at the edge of the world.

That’s what keeps us climbing, and, it’s worth the pain. That’s the crazy part.

It’s worth anything.

So, me, giant kelsey - has FINALLY bought herself a pair of high heels. And I know I have shoes with some sort of "heel" (refer to my lesbian boots)... but never have i bought myself a pair of pumps. I am the queen of flats. which has served me just fine.. but i have been dying for a pair of heels...

and not just any heels.. but SPARKLY heels.

However, as I went shopping the past few days, I realized that this goal was not so easily attainable. Because most of the heels that met my sparkly and black criteria looked something like this:

gorgeous, yes, but WAY too high for this chick. and the heel is so skinny.. and that just, that doesnt work for a tall and fall-prone girl who has never owned a pair of heels before. and maybe at some point i can work myself to the point where being 6 feet is acceptable with the help of 4 inch heels.. but for my first pair of heels - i really didnt want to push it. I really needed small heels... but that dream didn't really seem attainable. oh well.

So i assumed I had to give up. because smaller heels DO exist, as i saw in every shoe store, just not in the sparkly type. I assumed it was because if you wanted sparkly heels - you want to go ALL out. which means 4 inch heels. AM I RIGHT? yeah. it sucked.

We decided to go to DSW.. and as I am walking down the isles, i see them - a pair of black sparkly heels.. but like... SMALL heels. so i try them on, and they fit FABULOUSLY, and I am only like 5'11 ish in em! So of course, my heart was set on them right away.

I can't stop gushing about them... They are everything I was searching for (well, maybe I could deal with a little bit less rounded toe.. but HEY I AINT COMPLAINING!).. and they actually look a lot cuter in person, i couldnt find a picture to really do it justice.

But they are by mix no. 6 (a shoe company ive never heard of) and were $40 bucks.. which seems pretty reasonable for black sparkly pumps. a 2.5 inch heel.. and really easy to walk in (which is no small feat for me). They are perfect first time pumps, but even more perfect than I could ever hope for because they are black and they are sparkly and they are MINE.

I can't WAIT to get back to Guelph and dress up with my LADIES in these bad boys! sparkle glitter pretty fun times yay!

So I am pretty proud of my first heels, definitely went a little shy - not feeling brave enough for skinny pumps or for too high of a heel.. next time i might be more brave and go with these? the world's tallest heels! what do you guys think? I guess I could add 9 inches onto my height, right guys? aint nothing wrong with being 6'6? RIGHT? RIGHT? .....

Kristen Bell's Sloth: AUTO-TUNED!

Your favourite video of 2012 has now been autotuned.

So darn catchy!

Gosh, she is just too friggen cute.

a short collection of quotes

"Maybe we like the pain. Maybe we're wired that way.
Because without it, I don't know; maybe we just wouldn't feel real.
What's that saying? Why do I keep hitting myself with a hammer?
Because it feels so good when I stop."

- Meredith Grey

"I believe that everything happens for a reason.
People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when their right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself,
and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together."

- Marilyn Monroe

“She wanted something else, something different, something more.
Passion and romance, perhaps, or maybe quiet conversations in candlelit rooms.
Or perhaps something as simple as not being second.”

- Nicholas Sparks

“I think there's something so attractive about mystery.
There's something so attractive about the chase. And the bad guy ...
bad boys know how to keep the chase going throughout an entire relationship
because you never know if you completely have them or not.
That's why they're so hard to get over.”

Taylor Swift

"stop complaining"

You know what is one thing that people do that isn't fair? When you are feeling sad and someone replies: "yeah that sucks, but you really shouldn't be complaining. There are people out there that have it way worse than you."

It makes me so frustrated, because don't you think that we all know that? Don't you think that we all understand that there is a world out there full of suffering and sadness and hunger and death? We get that. Big time! And we feel so sad about that unfairness.

But that doesn't mean that we aren't allowed to hurt.

That doesn't mean we aren't allowed to feel a little down in the dumps once in a while.

I mean, no one likes a complainer. yes, and I agree that complaining really doesn't get you that far (if anywhere!) But being sad and talking about that is not the same thing as complaining, and I just don't think enough people respect that. What I am trying to say has nothing to do with complaints like "ugh im so fat" or "ugh i have no nice clothes".. but simply emotional things.

It doesn't have to be a competition. If you care about someone, than you should care about the fact that they are hurting. It should not matter whether or not they have it bad, if it feels bad for someone, then it is bad. Nothing more than that.

And sometimes we feel ridiculous for hurting, because we know that life is pretty good to us. But sometimes its just really hard. And sometimes we can't explain it. No one should be punished for feeling sad or down in the dumps..

Think about this: if someone is vocal about being sad - they are probably reaching out for help. Why would you punish them by making them feel shittier than they already feel by telling them that their feelings are out of proportion and totally ridiculous? It's mean.

Just, don't do that.

If you are lucky enough to not ever feel hurt, well then good for you. Just don't punish those who do. Simple as that.

And let me just say that being sad, or even complaining, doesn't mean someone is not grateful! Having a bad day, or a hard time, does not mean that someone thinks that life is unfair or that they don't deserve that life. And if you do feel that way, then you need to either get help (because that means something is probably really wrong) or just get some perspective (because heck, it might make you feel even better!) Look at this picture. It is pretty cool, it says nothing about being stupid because you are sad - but it just kind of helps to show you how lucky we are to live in a place where we live and have the resources we have. We can feel emotionally sad but that doesn't mean we don't understand how blessed we are in comparison to others in the world.

If someone says the same thing every day, and you offer suggestions to help them feel better, and they don't listen.. Or they keep doing things that they know will end up making them feel shitty, or stuff like that - once again, that is DIFFERENT from what I am saying. Then yeah, tell em to smarten up or shut up! But when someone is having a hard time, give em a little break.

a day in the life: the beatles

For the people that know me, one thing that they might know the most about me - is that I love boy bands. Jonas Brothers... The Biebz... Everyone looks at me and sees a girl who loves boy bands. But those who really know me, know that it started with a really special band - the beatles.

When I was younger, like probably only grade 7, I got hooked after listening to the greatest hits album. And if you thought I loved the Jonas Brothers, you should have seen me with the beatles. But it was even more pathetic, because 1/2 of the band was dead, so every time i watched a documentary or read a book about them - I soobbbeeddd, just knowing that I would never get to experience them as a band in my lifetime. It was just so sad. Still is, really. And my tattoos, 2 of them are due to the beatles.

The Beatles taught me so much about myself, and so much about music. They taught me that all I needed was love. And so many other life lessons. They also helped inspire the name of my blog. The Beatles made me who I am, and I forever hold a sacred place for them in my heart. After I saw Paul McCartney in concert, I sobbed for days. I sobbed when Paul McCartney turned 64.. Because all I could think about was how young he was when he wrote "when I'm 64".

The Beatles taught me to Let it Be. That nothing was going to change my world. Basically any song they have ever released, has taught me something in life. Gosh, they just really ruled the music world. All those songs. All those ORIGINAL songs. What brilliant minds those boys had. All their own lyrics and all their own chords. In 30 more years, people might not remember the Jonas Brothers.. But in 100 more years - people will remember the Beatles. I just, I owe so much to them. And so does pretty much EVERY artist who has come after them. They started a revolution. For music, and more importantly - for love.

The Beatles... The only boy band you can obsess over and NOT get made fun of. The best band to ever come into the music world. My boyfriends. Any artist just desires so hard to reach the level of fame of the beatles - they call bieber's fame "biebermania".. but come on, it will always be beatlemania, and no one could ever compare to that.

we must still dare to believe.

I'm Bringing Sexy "Back"

There is something so sexy about ANYTHING that is backless. It is almost sexier than clevage, because the back is usually so hidden. And to see it so exposed, well, it is just so sexy. But in a class way. I love the wedding dresses that are backless, so scandy and yet so classy. My favourite trend right now, for sure. Are you bringing sexy back?

However, if you are like me.. you are pretty scared to attempt it. Because, I refuse to go braless. Unless it is a TIGHT dress that ensures no boob dropage. At a D-cup, saggy boobs happen (yes even when you are 21). So a backless dress or a backless top, basically says "sorry you cant wear me". Which blows. So I just did some major looking into it, and I guess that there are options for us busty gals! We can drop $50 at Victorias Secret and get that bra over there. It looks kind of strange, but you can see how it would work. There are options like nipple stickers, but when support is your main issue.. something along these lines is best. They have a few options, and brands other than VS do it too, but yeah, there is hope for us! We probably can't go tooooo low, or go with the ones that are ever so flowy and dainty, but hey. Who cares. I am happy just to look at the damn backless clothes. Sigh.
