Seriously, though.

It is time for another nap. See you in a few hours!

Saturday, March 26, 2011

you know its a good night when....

1 - You can't remember much past 8

2 - You drank unlimited beer for 2 hours for only $15

3 - Literally NO ONE made it downtown

4 - You end up with something like THIS (with no explanation HOW it happened):

school = life

Here is my plan for the week, I am telling you because I have no more time to blog. Even right now I am cutting it close.

I have:

an evolutionary biology paper due monday, and it is a research paper. Which means, it's brutal and time consuming. It is pretty cool, I am writing it on "why we age" (because there is NO adaptive or reproductive benefit to it)

an evolutionary psychology paper due next thursday, and this will be an awesome paper to write. It only has to be 1000 words (child's play) and I am writing it on ... RELIGION (of course). More so, why has religion always existed, and has continued to exist despite the vast evidence against it. What benefits are there to faith? (there are some.. as in, it makes people feel good). Should be great.

a paper for my seminar in public health, due next friday, which I am focusing on STDs (more specifically HPV) and just talking about what public health is doing, if they are really trying to promote it and then I have to suggest ways that more people will get vaccinated.

and I have to finish a case study in my abnormal psychology class by next friday. We start with basic information about a hypothetical patient, and we get to ask 5 questions over the duration of the case study, and we have to try to clinically diagnose him. This is actually really interesting, and it is an online group project.. I love it, and we are on the right track I am suuure.

So, with ALL that work I really should not be doing anything fun this weekend. But, alas. I am.

It is a few of my friend's birthdays, and so we are going to Waterloo (where all the birthday girls live) and going on a brewery tour thing. I am not sure of the details, all I know is that we get 2 or 3 hours of UNLIMITED BEEEEER, for $15. Which I would say is pretty awesome. Then we have VIP at a bar downtown (I have never been downtown Waterloo, should be funnn).

But, saturday morning I plan to wake up early, and head back to Guelph and work my little non-existent butt off.

LaLaLa, life is good. Busy, but good.

100 facts about me.

1. I hate water. Like, I actually hate it. Drinking it is such a chore. But I am thirsty ALL the time. Generally I drink crystal light, or diluted juice. That's another thing, I mostly drink juice diluted (except orange juice) it is just way too sweet.

2. I am actually really scared that there will be a "zombie" apocolypse in our lifetime. With medicine, and nanobots, and all this crazy stuff and advances.. I think it is totally plausible, and it scares me. A lot.

3. I am not a huge fan of chocolate, but I go nuts for reese's peanut butter cups. Seriously, I dominate the whole thing in about 30 seconds.

4. Other than peanut butter cups, I am a ridiculously slow eater. Sometimes its embarrassing so I try to speed up, but then I end up choking and it's generally no fun.

5. I don't get heartburn often, but when I do it is the most debilitating thing that ever happens to me. Ask Brooke, sometimes when I am home and wake up with heartburn, I will call the home phone from my cell and beggggg for someone to bring me pepto.

6. In first year a few friends and I were having a water fight in res, and it was really fun, but I ended up slipping and falling down a set of stairs and I really did some permanent damage. There is an indent on my right butt/hip that hasn't gone away after two whole years.

7. No matter how much I brush and floss, I almost always get cavities.

8. I get really homesick from time to time, partly for my family, but mostly for my puppies.

9. I have nightmares every. single. night. every night. Imagine the type of nightmares where you wake up, confused and scared, your heart beating out of your chest..... yeah, every night.

10. I hate taking pain killers, so when I do take pain killers, you know that it is BAD.

11. Every time I look at my dog Lucy a little part of me breaks, because she IS Millie, everything about Lucy reminds me of Millie. And, its been 2 years, but I just can't get over Millie's death. She was honestly my best friend, and ugh, I am on the verge of tears so that's all I will say about that.

12. One of the things that gets me riled up the most is people who accept things without any proof or because thats what they were taught as a child. And this isn't just about religion. It's about everything in life, I think faith is a dangerous concept - and relying to heavy on it can only lead to bad things. I think it is a beautiful world out there, and to not even try to understand it is just mind boggling to me.

13. I used to only own black clothes, some purple, some red, some random colours here and there.. but lately my closet has been filling up with colours. It's nice.

14. I was such a little brat growing up, and I can't believe how mean I was to my parents at times. But the thing is, despite all that, they managed to do (what I think is) a great job. And I now get along amazingly with my parents. I actually LOVE hanging out with them. I would have never imagined becoming this close with my parents.

15. Most of you know this, but, I have to wear ear plugs when I swim. I am supposed to wear them when I shower, too, but I draw the line at the pool.

16. I am too generous. Like, actually. I need to stop being such a good sharer. People tell me I am too generous all the time, yet, I can't change. I know this doesn't seem like a bad thing, and I honestly don't mind one bit - I love sharing. But yeah...

17. I love having a summer birthday, but it always made me sad to never have my birthday at school.

18. I have seen the jonas brothers 9 times. 2 of those have been front row, once second row.. I feel pretty snobbish when it comes to concerts now, I always want to be close.

19. I feel like I relate to Demi Lovato, a lot.

20. I really AM a natural blonde.

21. I love pearls, any size... but the bigger the better when it comes to earrings.

22. Going to zumba makes me laugh so hard, so it ends up working my abs about twice as well.

23. When I take in really deep breaths my rib cage on my right side cracks. It always feels amazing, so I try to make it happen all the time. But it only works when I dont plan on it.

24. Paco has this weird ability to make me smile even when I want to cry.

25. I have gotten really good at painting my nails. but they chip within a day.

26. I haven't gotten tired of cesars yet!

27. It's weird, but I really don't like getting drunk anymore. When I drink its to a point where I am just buzzing a little bit, I hate being drunk.

56. Seriously, I need lotion wherever I go. To the bar, to class, to the bathroom. I will always be equipped with lotion.

57. I believe there is an explanation for everything, but the magic is in not always wanting to know - but just accepting those special moments as special. Just because I question things doesn't mean that I don't let loose and just feel "miracles" (even though, really, miracles are questionable).

be our guest

Apartment 104 has a guest for the next few days - Duff! It is honestly so nice having him here. I miss the presence of dogs, coming from a home with not one, not two, not three.. but FIVE dogs, its definitely hard not having any around. Dont get me wrong, Paco rules, but you can't exactly cuddle a chinchilla.

Me and my new furry little friend, Duff:

Bieber Fever

You know, I don't want to sound lamer than most of you already think I am. But I am a huge fan, and I have been for a really long time. I liked Justin Bieber before you knew who he was, I liked him when it was possible for him to do mall signings because not enough girls would show up that a mob scene would occur. I liked him when he only have like 400,000 followers, and when I was 1 of a small 4,000 that he followed.

I had Bieber fever before the term "Bieber Fever" was even coined.

Now, it seems like everyone is catching the fever. And I am so happy, don't get me wrong. But I hate the people that act like fans just to get attention, because it is "funny" or "cool" to like him, because he is "soo lame" according to everyone, and you are just so different because you like him. That is not a true fan.

Justin Bieber is an amazing kid, who comes from a city just a few hours (if that) away from my home. A place where I went on field trips constantly, where I saw my first real theater. I have shown Justin respect from the day I found out who he was. My love for him is NOT a joke. It is so much more than that.

I know, I am 20, and I am totally lame.

Here is my video I took in August at his show in London, ON. Enjoy!

If you don't yet have twitter, I recommend it!

I have had it for 2 years (2 years on March 12th to be exact, weird). And I love it - just recently it seems like the twitter trend is hitting people I know, but most of my friends do not have twitter still. I love it, I get quotes, the news, hilarious celeb gossip... all directly on my timeline. If you get bored of a person, you just unfollow them, it is that simple!

If you have twitter, and you are reading my blog - you should definitely follow me.. I have been told my tweets are what get people through the day.. That is probably because I don't use too much of a censor and say whatever goes through my little head! @kelseymcawesome is a follow you won't regret.

Fat Tuesday

It only comes once a year.. so for those of you who enjoy your sweets - GO FOR IT! Don't hold back. Just indulge..

If I may make a recommendation: Go for a super large, and super sugary paczki. Preferably custard flavored, and glazed. If I was going to get one, this would definitely be my choice.

However... my sweet tooth comes and goes, and sadly (well.. maybe it isn't that sad, I am saving 500-1000 calories) it is gone right now.

Despite by lack of love for the sweets at the moment, I love the sweetness of fruit, it is perfect. I eat an apple or two a day, and melon galore. But I basically ignore vegetables, because they SUCK. But I know they are an important part of a person's diet, so me and my roommate came up with an amazing faux-fruit recipe.

Get ready for this.

Kelsey and Erin's Faux-Fruit Recipe

1 or 2 or 3 stalks of disgusting and boring celery

Maple Syrup (use your eyes)

1. Take celery out of fridge.
2. You can cut it up if you feel like it, but you don't have to.
3. Take maple syrup and drizzle over celery. Or, you can put it in a little dish if you would rather dip your celery.
4. Eat.

And voila. It takes like a friggen apple.

Sweet, crunchy and watery. And it is a vegetable!

double birthday all the way

First, a very happy birthday to my roommate MATT! He turned 21 in style ;) Just a casual night at unit 104 was just the thing we all needed, the perfect way to celebrate his birthday. Matt is one of the greatest additions to my life, he is the type of person that always makes you smile. I also have the best talks with Matt, and the goofiest "Matt, will you buy me this kinder egg?" "No.. but I'll hold it for you. See, just as good." Hahahah. Love you princess Matt!

And next, a super duper happy birthday to the sweetest dog in the world, Dexter! Dexter is two years old today, and we have enjoyed him so much.. After our dog millie died in 2008, I seriously never thought I would be able to love a golden retriever as much as I loved Millie, but Dexter has done a wonderful job of stealing my heart! Dexter is... how do I put this gently... a total DOPE and that just makes him that much more endearing! Just thinking about Dex and all his shenanigans makes me smile so much... I already called home and wished Dexter a happy birthday. Ahh, I am just so happy to have a dog that means this much to me - and I hope he has a wonderful day.. I am sad I cannot spend it with him.

be inspired

Everyone has bad days. It is impossible to be happy all the time. Look at it from an evolutionary/scientific view, we get used to things - like we get used to the temperature of a pool, at one point it was freezing, but eventually it becomes normal and comfortable. Things that made us happy at one time, slowly become the norm - and soon, they don't make us as happy as they used to. It just happens, we adjust and we stop appreciating the little things.

It is a sad truth, and it happens to absolutely everyone. If you stop noticing the small things, you stop getting the same pleasure that you used to get from them.

So take a second, and just be thankful for the things in your life that sure, they may be small, but do they make you smile? Did they once make you smile? Could they make you smile again?

External factors play such a huge role in our lives. We all go through extremely tough times, and sometimes things seem absolutely impossible. But as my roommate Erin told me this morning - you get through things, and these are usually the things that make you a stronger person.

We all take different roads in our lives, and we all have one life to live - so how do you choose to live yours? I recommend that you all get inspired to just LIVE. Allow yourself to laugh freely, cry freely, love freely, and just share yourself with the world. You are a gift just waiting to be opened by the world - why waste that? Be the best you that you can be. Like they say, life is a roller coaster, so why not ride it?

the truth about the flu

This is something that I think is VERY important, and something that you all need to know. Because most people do not have the facts right about the flu, and this is a MAJOR problem when it comes to health.

So, what is the flu?

If you are like most people, I bet you think it involves having a sore tummy and puking/diarrhea. Well, guess what. You are WRONG. There is no such thing as a stomach flu, this is a very common misconception (don't worry, almost everyone thinks this), but what you have is a gastro-intestinal problem.

The flu, oh boy, it is BAD. and very dangerous. It is a virus (antibiotics can't do anything) that affects your respitory system - and will knock you out hard for a few days. Trust me, when you have the real flu, you will know it because you will be out of commission for days. You won't even be able to get up from your bed to go to the bathroom because you ache so much.

Lets talk about h1n1, the 2009 strain. Most of you probably thought it wasn't a huge deal - because there was all this talk about HOW bad it was going to be - and it turned out to be "nothing". I hope you realize this has EVERYTHING to do with public health and the preventative measures they took. Millions of pigs and chickens were slaughtered in hopes to stop the spread, flights were banned between certain areas, and vaccinations were made very quickly.

Do you realize how big of a problem h1n1 could have been? We literally prevented a pandemic from happening. Lets flash back to 1918, where a flu, called the Spanish Flu, took over the world. 20 to 40 million people died. DIED. The people in the USA who died from the Spanish flu outnumber the amount of people who died in WWI and WWII. And not to mention, half of the world's population was infected.

Fun fact about the Spanish flu, it was H1N1.

Get your flu shots people. Every year. It is not good enough to get it once, because there is something called antigenic shift that happens - that mutates the flu virus, so it is impossible to have one vaccination that will work for years. Scientists work hard to determine the H & N of a flu, the inner contents and make a vaccine. The best part of vaccines? They will always work against the strains that they are fighting against.

Each year, scientists work extremely hard to find the flu viruses that have the potential to be most harmful, and make a vaccine for that year. People often say that a flu shot makes them sick, but that is BUNK. It may make you nauseous, but that is completely unrelated to the FLU itself - and trust me, a little nausea is better than the flu.

I got H1N1 back in 2009, after crossing Michigan and Ohio and almost all of Ontario to follow the Jonas Brothers and attending 3 concerts in 4 days. I was in very close contact with many people, and viruses spread very easy. Trust me, it was horrifying. 4 or 5 days of my life are completely GONE, because I spent them half passed out on a couch, coughing my lungs out, and not peeing. I seriously thought I was going to die, each time I coughed it felt like someone was literally scratching my lungs. I felt weak. I was in so much pain, it was just unreal.

And that isn't just H1N1, H1N1 is no worse than the other types of flu there are. The reason H1N1 got so much attention was because it had the potential to be a pandemic. Instead of the normal antigenic drift that takes place in a virus, antigenic SHIFT was going on. This means that full viruses were changing, and could be spread from pigs to humans to birds, etc. And it keeps changing, and whole new strains of H1N1 kept being made.

And the other thing with pandemic flu that is a huge misconception. It isn't the children and elderly who are most likely to die. It is us. The 18-50 year old people. We are at the greatest risk for death.

Protect yourselves.

I literally cannot understand how you could make the conscious decision to NOT get the flu shot. You would never refuse to get your mumps shot, or hep A or B or C or whatever. The flu is more common and spreads easier and is deadly.

The flu isn't just a tummy ache. It actually isn't a tummy ache at all.

Learn your facts.

the show must go on

Today, my high school presented their Sears Drama play: requiem. I am so sad that I had to miss it, but I have total faith that it will make it to the next level, because they were directed by a superstar (my sister).

Sears was a part of my life for 4 years. It changed everything about me. It shaped my friends, my confidence and so much more. And so much of that had to do with the amazing Mama Lew. She just has had such an impact on so many students, she deserves a major award. This lady is incredible.

I am obviously feeling sad and happy and just emotional right now. There are so many things making me feel this way, but I am also so proud.

Here, take a look at vintage Kelsey Edwards (can you tell which one of these smiling faces is 16 year old Kelsey?). This is a play that took place 4 years ago, and was beyond incredible. It was called The Chronicles of Jane: Book 7, and we made it to showcase (the highest level of sears drama that there is!). This was such a fun year, and it took up most of my life - but I wouldn't change that experience for the world. I am sure most people who were in the Requiem play today would agree with me.

basically my point is: i am so flipping proud of my sister, and all of you involved in this play. I know how much time and effort goes into these things, and I know you made Mrs. Lewis very VERY proud today.

Congrats, guys.
